How to add Gmail to multiboxi
You connect Gmail to multiboxi the way a mail program does: over IMAP and SMTP. Google requires an app password for this: a separate 16-character password that works only in mail programs.
What you need
- 2-Step Verification turned on for your Google Account.
- A personal account. App passwords may be unavailable for work and school accounts, so ask your administrator.
- App passwords are also unavailable if you use Advanced Protection or 2-Step Verification with security keys only.
Step by step
- If you do not have 2-Step Verification yet, turn it on in your Google Account settings (Security).
- Open the app passwords page: myaccount.google.com/apppasswords. Google may ask you to sign in again.
- Enter a name such as “multiboxi” and create the password. Google shows it only once, so copy it.
- In multiboxi choose “Add a mailbox”, then the Gmail tile. Enter your email address and password.
- The wizard checks the connection and shows the mailbox folders. Give the mailbox a name and a colour.
Server settings
| Server | Port | Encryption | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incoming mail (IMAP) | imap.gmail.com | 993 | SSL/TLS |
| Outgoing mail (SMTP) | smtp.gmail.com | 465 | SSL/TLS |
| Username | full email address | ||
Good to know
- Why now: from January 2027 Gmail stops fetching mail from other accounts. What exactly changes.
- When you change your Google Account password, all app passwords stop working. Create a new one and enter it in the mailbox settings in multiboxi.
- You can revoke the app password on the same Google page. multiboxi then loses access to Gmail.
- Gmail labels appear in multiboxi as folders (if they are visible in IMAP in your Gmail settings).
- Google discourages app passwords where you can use Google account authorisation (OAuth) instead. multiboxi does not support that yet; we will add it later.
If something does not work
- Wrong password message: check that you are entering the app password (without spaces), not your main password, and that IMAP access is turned on.
- You can enter a new password later in the mailbox settings in multiboxi, without removing the mailbox.
