Gmail from January 2027: no more fetching mail from other accounts or “Send mail as”

If you collect mail from another provider or your company domain in Gmail, it will stop working in January 2027. Here is what exactly Google is switching off, what stays, and how to keep all your mailboxes in one place.

What changes

Google described the changes on two Gmail help pages. In January 2027 three features disappear for third-party accounts, meaning addresses not hosted by Google:

  • Fetching mail from other accounts (POP3)Gmail will stop fetching new messages from your other mailboxes. The “Check mail from other accounts” option will disappear from Gmail settings on computers.
  • “Send mail as” for third-party addressesGmail, on the web and in the mobile apps, will no longer send mail from an address not hosted by Google, such as your company domain, through your account. Google’s help calls this feature “Send as”.
  • GmailifyThird-party mailboxes linked to Gmail will lose its spam filtering, categories and faster search.

When

  1. After Q1 2026New users can no longer turn on Gmailify or POP fetching. Adding third-party accounts in Gmail on the web is no longer possible.
  2. Q3 2026Google announced the end of “Send mail as” for third-party addresses and shows notifications in Gmail.
  3. Q3–Q4 2026 (now)Transition: existing settings keep working, but Google may restrict new ones.
  4. January 2027“Send mail as” for third-party addresses, Gmailify and POP fetching disappear for everyone.

Google has not named an exact day in January 2027.

Who is affected

Check in Gmail on a computer: Settings, then “See all settings” and the “Accounts and Import” tab. The change affects you if you have:

  • a mailbox under “Check mail from other accounts”,
  • an address not hosted by Google under “Send mail as”,
  • a third-party mailbox linked through Gmailify.

If you have none of these, the changes do not affect you.

What stays the same

  • Messages Gmail has already fetched stay in your mailbox.
  • “Send mail as” for Google-hosted addresses: other Gmail addresses and aliases in your Google Workspace.
  • Other mailboxes added in the Gmail app on a phone or tablet (over IMAP), as separate accounts.
  • Access to Gmail from other apps over IMAP and POP, and through the Gmail API.
  • Automatic forwarding from another provider to your Gmail address.
  • A one-time import of mail and contacts from another account, without ongoing sync.

Your options

Google points to your provider’s website or app, a mail program on your computer and the Gmail app on your phone; forwarding is another route. multiboxi is shown alongside.

  • Forwarding is set up with your other provider. Messages arrive in Gmail, but you can reply only from your Gmail address. Forwarded mail may land in spam, for example when the sender’s domain has a strict DMARC policy.
  • The Gmail app shows each mailbox as a separate account, but only in the app on a phone or tablet.
  • A mail program (such as Thunderbird, Outlook or Apple Mail) handles all accounts, but you set it up separately on each computer.
  • multiboxi works in the browser on any computer and phone, and your mail stays with your providers. It is in testing: see what already works.

Security of third-party tools

Google warns that third-party tools replacing these features often need your mail credentials, which carries risk. That is a fair point, and it applies to multiboxi too.

That is why multiboxi connects with app passwords where your provider offers them (you can revoke them at any time), stores passwords encrypted, requires two-factor authentication, does not store message content and runs on servers in the EU. How we protect access to your mailboxes.

Questions

Is Gmail really going to stop fetching mail from other accounts?

Yes. According to Gmail Help, January 2027 brings the end of POP3 fetching from other accounts (“Check mail from other accounts”), “Send mail as” for third-party addresses, and Gmailify. If you already use these features, they keep working until January 2027, and Google is already restricting new setups. Everything about the changes.

What changes in “Send mail as”?

From January 2027 Gmail will no longer send mail from another provider’s address (such as your company domain) through your account, neither on the web nor in the mobile apps. “Send mail as” keeps working for Google-hosted addresses: other Gmail addresses and Google Workspace aliases. You can still add a third-party mailbox to the Gmail app on your phone as a separate account (IMAP) and send from it.

What about the Gmail app on my phone?

In the Gmail app for Android, iPhone and iPad you can still add other mailboxes over IMAP, as separate accounts. “Send mail as” goes away there too. This works only in the app on a phone or tablet; on a computer you need something else.

I collect mail from another provider in Gmail. What should I do?

Until January 2027 you do not need to change anything. After that Gmail stops fetching this mail. You can set up forwarding with your other provider (you will then reply from your Gmail address), add the mailbox to the Gmail app on your phone, or bring all your mailboxes together in multiboxi. Compare the options.

Gmail fetched my mail and deleted it from the server. What happens to those messages?

If your POP settings did not keep a copy on the server, the fetched messages now exist only in Gmail. They will stay there: Google says messages already imported will not disappear. In multiboxi you will see them in your Gmail mailbox.

Do I have to give up Gmail?

No. You add Gmail to multiboxi like any other mailbox and see it next to the others. Your address, messages and labels stay in Gmail.
